Reporting from women’s communities

From 29 to 31 July 2024, we held a three-day workshop for women reporters and radio presenters working on stories about women’s lives in their communities. The training was part of Umukenyezi Iwacu, our regular programme sharing information about Burundian women and their communities. It formed part of our Communication & Media programme and the Women Reporters Network initiative. Our aim was to help participants produce reports and radio programmes that are sensitive to gender and bring women’s experiences into media coverage.

Choosing subjects and gathering information

Journalist Rémy Harerimana led the first-day sessions on reportage, identifying relevant subjects and finding quality information. A second facilitator covered gender-sensitive reporting. Participants then practised choosing a subject, gathering information and structuring the material into a report.

Recording with a smartphone

On the second day, participants worked on audio and video recording with smartphones. In the morning, a professional photographer shared his experience of working with simple equipment. In the afternoon, participants proposed gender-sensitive story ideas for their provinces, with the trainer guiding the sessions.

Closing the workshop

The workshop closed with certificates for every participant. Umukenyezi Iwacu is reported by women, for women, giving them room to exchange experiences and share information about community initiatives through community radio and other information platforms.
