Communication & Media: Umukenyezi Iwacu and the Women Reporters Network

Communication & Media is one of our three programmes. It produces Umukenyezi Iwacu, our radio programme, and runs the Women Reporters Network that gathers stories from the provinces.

This is our story archive for the programme. For what the programme is, see Communication & Media.

Umukenyezi Iwacu: a voice for women

Umukenyezi Iwacu is our regular radio programme. Women speak in it about their work, their families, their rights and the decisions that shape their lives, and specialists answer the questions the episodes raise. It airs on community radio stations and is published on Audiomack, YouTube, Facebook and the partner community channels.

By August 2025 the programme had reached 100 episodes. The subjects follow what the women bring: in early 2025 episodes covered savings and small-business finance, the Kirundi saying “niko zubakwa” and whether it excuses abuse, how couples share household decisions, and the lives of women and girls with disabilities in families, schools and at work. In March 2025 the programme prepared a series on what women’s rights mean and whether they are respected.

The Women Reporters Network

The programme is reported by women, for women. Our reporters work in their own provinces and bring the experiences of women there into the episodes. In July 2024 we held a three-day training for women reporters and radio presenters on gender-sensitive reporting, choosing subjects and recording with simple equipment. In March 2025 our reporters took part in the State-organised International Women’s Rights Day parades in Bururi, Rumonge, Gitega, Bubanza and Rutana, and our reporter in Gitega, Claudette Nshimirimana, received a prize for her work for women in her province.

Campaigns and series

The programme carries our campaigns. During the 2024 16 Days of Activism we ran a special series on domestic violence, abandonment, widows and family property, divorce and informal unions. In 2025 the Yoooo campaign took survivor-centred conversations to four media platforms and closed with women’s groups. In March 2026 UBUTUMWA shared women’s own messages on their rights, and in June 2026 we opened a series on women’s role in reconciliatory justice.

Working with partners

Partners also bring us into public debate. In September 2025 INGO MAG announced a discussion and debate, with Ingiro Action Center among the partners, on how to strengthen Burundian women’s participation in decision-making and sustainable development.

Partners bring subjects and audiences to the programme. In May 2025 we signed a partnership with INGO, the organiser of Miss Burundi 2025, to support the competition and to connect the finalists with women’s groups. The finalists then came to the studio: in July and August 2025 they discussed their projects and the role a Miss can play in national development, in conversation with rural women we accompany.

Where the programme goes next

Every episode is built from what women in the groups and the provinces tell our reporters. If you have a subject you would like the programme to cover, or you work with a radio station that would like to carry it, write to us.
