Umukenyezi Iwacu launched a five-radio series for the 16 Days of Activism to discuss gender-based violence.
27 November to 5 December 2024
We ran a special Umukenyezi Iwacu radio series during the 2024 16 Days of Activism, with episodes on violence at home, family relationships and women’s property concerns.
A special radio series
The series set out to build understanding of gender-based violence and to encourage community dialogue on the issues families face.
Topics across the dated episodes
Four dated episodes addressed domestic violence on 27 November, abandonment within a relationship on 29 November, widows and family property on 3 December, and the weight of a birth outside marriage on 5 December. Other episodes addressed property after divorce, land conflicts and informal unions. These subjects brought different family and property concerns into the campaign conversations.
Women shared experiences in the episodes, alongside journalists, reporters, guests and legal specialists. The episode on widows and family property brought trader Bukuru Sandrine, Audacie Niyonsavye and Prisca Hakizimana into the studio with jurist Ntarima Caritas, reported by Nadia Nahigejeje from Cibitoke. The episode on abandonment was hosted by Jackie Uwizeyemina, with judge Espérance Nininahazwe among the guests. The broadcasts connected personal accounts with discussion of the issues facing women and families during the campaign.
