Women traders in Bujumbura and Rumonge explore shared business opportunities

Women meet during the Kazi ya Mama learning exchange between groups in Bujumbura and Rumonge.

20 March 2026

Through Kazi ya Mama, we brought women traders from Bujumbura and Rumonge together to compare business challenges and consider possible cooperation.

A learning exchange in Rumonge

We organised a learning exchange in Rumonge for women’s trader groups from Bujumbura and Rumonge. The exchange took place in Rumonge on 20 March 2026. It describes the meeting as part of Kazi ya Mama, our programme for supporting women’s groups in low-income activities and strengthening their business skills.

With entrepreneurship experts and other facilitators, participants shared their experiences and discussed challenges in their work. Traders in Rumonge described a lack of places to sell their goods. Traders from Bujumbura raised high merchandise prices and the income they lose as a result.

Considering ways to work together

The discussion led to an idea: one group’s challenge might create an opportunity for another. Participants explored possible cooperation between the groups, including partnerships to supply and distribute merchandise. These were possibilities raised during the exchange, not confirmed trading arrangements.
