Through Abana Bacu, families came together to talk about expectations and support for the school year.
9 September 2026
We gathered mothers from women’s groups we support and their children to discuss how families, schools and communities can support children through the school year.
Parents and children in dialogue
The activity was built around the theme “Children, parents, educators and community” and gave families time to discuss their expectations and responsibilities.
Participants talked about what parents expect from children and children from parents, expectations of schools and teachers, and each person’s role in a child’s education. They also discussed cooperation, listening, communication and respect at home. Teacher Emmanuela Nzoyihaya, psychologist Lyesette Gahimbare and child-protection specialist Wenceslas Nyabenda contributed to the exchange.
Practical support through the school year
Practical back-to-school advice also covered hygiene, organisation, revision, taking part in household tasks and regularity. Parents were encouraged to support children through listening, encouragement and everyday follow-up, even when resources are limited.
