Afya ya Mama brought free ultrasounds and health advice to women in Buterere and Tenga

Women in Buterere and Tenga received free ultrasounds, consultations and health advice during the fifth edition of Afya ya Mama.

14 and 29 March 2026

In March 2026 we held the fifth edition of Afya ya Mama, offering free consultations and ultrasounds to pregnant women in Buterere and at the Tenga parish.

Free care for women who cannot afford regular check-ups

Afya ya Mama helps women living in great hardship follow their pregnancies when they cannot pay for regular medical care. For this edition we worked with Procrea Clinique, led by Dr Innocent Ndayikunda, a gynaecologist, and with the parishes of Kivoga-Tenga and Saint Jean-Paul II of Buterere. The doctor volunteered his time.

What the women received

Forty-three pregnant women took part. Each had an ultrasound showing how her baby was developing, and was taught which check-ups matter and how to look after her health during pregnancy. Dr Ndayikunda also volunteered to guide and follow up women with high-risk pregnancies.

Thanks from the doctor and the parishes

Our Director General, Yvette Ihorimbere, thanked Dr Ndayikunda and the parish leaders and reminded everyone that access to what a woman needs for good health is a right, before questions of money. Dr Ndayikunda thanked the parishes for organising the activity so that it supports those most in need, and said he will keep taking part in similar work. Father Remy Nsengiyumva, for Saint Jean-Paul II of Buterere, and Father Serges Bigirimana, for Kivoga-Tenga, hoped that mothers living in remote hills could also be reached.

More than 200 women reached so far

With this fifth edition, more than 200 women from low-income backgrounds have received free consultations and ultrasounds through Afya ya Mama. We believe every woman deserves dignified health care, whatever her economic situation. Magazine Jimbere reported on the activity on 11 April 2026.
