Cultural Actions: supporting Burundian artists and cultural organisations

Cultural Actions is one of our three programmes. It covers our support to individual artists, our work with cultural organisations, and the initiatives we run ourselves, including Umukenyezi Show.

This is our story archive for the programme. For what the programme is, see Cultural Actions.

Artist Support

We support Burundian artists with production, promotion and the practical conditions a career needs. In June 2024 we sponsored the launch of Andy Mwag’s “Tonight” music video with Kuza Muzik, during Fête de la Musique, with Yvette Ihorimbere coordinating the project.

Umukenyezi Show

Umukenyezi Show is our own platform for women artists. It pairs a discussion on women’s development with a concert, so that the celebration and the conversation happen together. The second edition, on 15 March 2024 brought a morning panel on shared responsibility for women’s development and an evening concert by women artists at the Institut français du Burundi, with Kuza Muzik and Equity and Associates.

Cultural Organisation Support

Organisations carry the sector, and they need the same discipline as any other institution. In February and March 2026 we ran a strategic workshop for the Amicale des Musiciens du Burundi as it marked 40 years, working through its strengths, weaknesses and opportunities and building an action plan for 2026 with its president and with representatives of the Ministry of Culture.

Cultural Initiatives Support

We also accompany initiatives that connect cultural actors to each other, to public institutions and to markets beyond Burundi.

Managers Connect is our space for artist managers: Backstage Talk in July 2026 brought managers, coaches and communications officers together on the profession’s challenges, and Chill and Talk in September 2026 gave managers a relaxed evening with Luc Mayitoukou on the daily realities of the job.

Beyond our own events we take part in the sector’s own moments: FIBO 5 in Moroni in June 2026, Visa for Music in Rabat in November 2025, a meeting with the Minister of Sports, Youth and Culture in September 2026, and the visit of the new Director of the Institut français du Burundi in October 2026. We also receive cultural actors passing through Bujumbura, as in October 2024, February 2026 and the delegation to the Ministry of Culture the same month.

Why the programme exists

Burundian music and culture create income, skills and identity. Our role is to make the conditions around them stronger: an artist who can launch a video, an association that can plan a year, a manager who can sign a clear contract, and a sector that meets its public institutions with a shared agenda.
